Extract from Pania and Kiwi – At the beach

The waves rolled forward and then back while the water rose and fell. Kiwi thought it looked like the ocean was breathing—like a giant water creature taking deep breaths, and he wondered why the water didn’t just stay in the same place.“Grab the boogie board, Kiwi!” Pania shouted excitedly. Beside the fact that he didn’t know what to do with a boogie board, Kiwi at first thought it was an awful idea. What if the big ocean creature breathed him right into its belly? What if the waves dragged him in and didn’t roll him out again? He looked around at the people having fun in the water. Then a thought popped into Kiwi’s head—if you’re always too scared to try something new, you’ll never try anything new.
